4 Principles to Becoming a Successful Lawyer

“You will not make a good lawyer! Law is too hard for someone like you to study! Don’t deceive yourself! You’re too dumb to study law! If I were you, I won’t waste my 5 years on a course you won’t do well in even if you’re given the course to study”.

These hurtful words of my friends, relatives, classmates kept ringing in my head as I filled my jamb form 2 years ago. When others started receiving admission letter and I was yet to get mine, I started to think perhaps these hurtful words were actually true. Maybe I wasn’t good enough to study law. Maybe I was really stupid to think I was fit to study law. I was starting to think maybe I was truly deceiving myself. But the determination to prove them wrong kept me hoping that I’d still get my own admission letter. This same determination has always kept me going and it would ensure I make it to the other end of the road in success.

Sometimes you don’t need people to tell you that you can make it. All you need is to believe in yourself and work towards achieving that which you want to achieve.

Nikos Kazantzakis once said, “in order to succeed, we must believe that we can”. It takes a man of patience and perseverance to attain success. Many a times, you are likely to fall but picking up courage to continue is where the success lies.

Below are helpful tips which I call The four principles (4Ps) of success. I believe these 4Ps would help you achieve the success you desire.

Persistence

Bill Bradley once said, “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in. On your way to success, many people would discourage you. You will have many reasons to give up but remember if you do, then you won’t achieve that success you started the journey for. No matter the hardship you’re currently facing, believe me, it’s for a limited period. Keep trying, before you know it, you will be on top.

2. Positivity
many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success before giving up. – Thomas Edison.

In many cases, if not solution, positivity acts as the strength to fight your problems. It makes you happy, glad in all the ways. Even when it seems as though all your efforts are not paying off, remember that YOUR POSITIVE ACTION COMBINED WITH POSITIVE THINKING RESULTS IN SUCCESS.

Perseverance

Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did. A person with perseverance will say YES I CAN as they are getting up after being knocked down. Always get up no matter how many times you fall. Standing up doesn’t make you a weakling. It gives you more courageous and brave. So never give up if you fail once.

Prayer

Putting God first is usually a good start. Prayer is the key but remember that God can’t bless an empty work. Prayer and work go together. You can’t keep praying for success while you are lazing around.

Conclusion

Those hurtful words of my relatives and friends has been my strong pillar in my legal journey. They have acted as watch words to keep me in track. Sometimes the negative words of people are what you need to move on. It gives you the strength that you need to prove them wrong. So no matter anyone tells you, tell yourself; YES, I CAN
